Joe is currently in the town of Saranac Lake, NY. He has been having great difficulty with his portage wheels (despite good results on the first 2 days). So much so that, given the amount of portaging ahead, he may decide to abort the mission at this point....if he cannot devise a better system. He is currently evaluating options and his situation, and is staying in a motel in Saranac today.
Hang in there. Check out Kayakaton Man and Cathy Mumford's blogs on the NFCT paddler blog section--they through paddled with kayaks. The smaller wheels may be better? St. Regis Outfitters in Saranac Lake may be helpful. We avoided the Teft Pond Fall area by getting a shuttle with them. You'll have some more rough portage along the Saranac River around some rapid and closer to Plattsburg where the wheels may be pretty useless (down trees) but after that, it's mostly roads you'll be pulling along. Until the Mud Carry in Maine. I think there is a shuttle through the Chesunkook Lake House that can help you avoid it if your gear is proving to be pretty taxing on you. There are so many great parts of the trail--and yes, they are necessarily the waterless ones! Good luck with whatever decision you may. You definitely can make up miles on the bigger lakes and downstream river sections.
